One of the most frequently asked questions I get is “what equipment is needed to become a Youtuber/Social Media Marketer”?Therefore I figured it was about time I compiled a list of my favourite equipment I use on a regular basis.
Now keep in mind I didn’t buy all of my expensive stuff at once. As with everyone’s camera bag, it took me a while to gather all the equipment I wanted. I started my youtube and SMM career using an Iphone, and much cheaper equipment…
Low Budget Beginners
Cell Phone Tripod Mount
This super cheap piece of equipment is a lifesaver. Even today if I need a second camera angle, or run out of battery on my main DSLR I will still use this simple little tool to plop my iPhone onto a tripod and continue recording.
Nothing fancy here, just an Amazon Basics tripod that can swivel up, down, side to side. Honestly, this should be one of the very first items you buy when starting a career on youtube or SMM. No longer will you find yourself searching for a flat table that just happens to be at the right height for your shot.
Cell phone audio can barely pass as acceptable, and syncing audio with USB mic can be a time-consuming task. Why not take all the hassle out of it and get yourself this crazy inexpensive piece of audio equipment! A wired Lavalier Microphone works well if you’re trying to capture an individual’s audio close to the camera. Downsides being you can only have one hooked up to your phone at a time, so if you were aiming to capture a conversation with equal audio levels then you’re going to need to take a look at this next option

Cellphone Shotgun Mic
These can get pricey, so I left you three options.
1. Get a universal shotgun mic, buy the mount separately.
I love the Rode VMGO Video Mic GO. This overall great mic can be used just about anywhere. It’s perfect for shooting both indoors and outdoors, although the feedback indoors can be a little fuzzy. Overall this is my go-to mic when I don’t know the situation. In order to use it on a cell phone though you’d need to buy a hot-shoot mount for it.

2. Buy a mic and stabilizer in one! The Sevenoak MicRig is camera rig stabilizer thing that also has a built-in mic, pretty cool eh? This is awesome if you plan on shooting any kind of moving shots with your phone. The downside is, it’s kinda overkilling to have a full rig on 24/7 just to capture audio.

3. Lastly is a small shotgun mic made for cellphones! Unfortunately, you will be compromising audio quality for a small compact mic. But if you’re tight on budget its better than nothing!
Lastly, you’ll need some lighting. Depending on how far away you’re shooting from, and of course how dark the room is will completely depend on the lighting needed. I always like to choose Neewer LED lights. These are awesome because they are small, portable, battery-powered, and can be mounted on top of a DSLR. They aren’t cheap, but they are the only lighting source you’ll ever need.

For The High Rollers.
This list is the actual list of equipment I use for my youtube videos, and on filming for my SMM clients.
This powerhouse is my go-to camera. The Canon 70D shoots awesome 1080p HD video, takes great still shots, and with a simple lens change can go from a vlogging camera to an extreme high-quality interview camera. Speaking of lenses, let’s go over a few of my favourites.

AMAZING INTERVIEW LENS
In my opinion, the canon 70D needs 2 lenses if you’re doing SMM/Youtube, and this is one of them. The 50mm lens makes shots look STUNNING, and for only $125 USD you can’t go wrong. It gives this awesome depth of field and is actually really good in low light conditions. This is my go-to lens when I want to make something loo professional, or just need a little more depth. The downside to this lens is there is no zoom, so you have to move the tripod around to get everything in the frame. This isn’t horrible… but if you’re shooting in a small room it can become an issue.

Wide Angle VLOGING lens
I NEVER step out of the house without this lens. If you plan on vlogging or shooting in tight spaces this is the lens for you. just about every big Youtuber with a Canon uses this as their vlogging lens. It has an amazing wide angle without giving much of a “fisheye” effect.
